POUGHKEEPSIE – A former Poughkeepsie man who was convicted of murder, robbery, and other crimes has lost the appeal to his prison sentence.  Thirty-year-old Kaheem Cummings is currently in the Clinton Correctional Facility serving a minimum prison sentence of 45 years and a maximum of life in prison for several different convictions.

While in the Dutchess County Jail in November of 2015 on charges of robbing a cab driver at gunpoint, Cummings was indicted for the July 2015 murder of Willie Trotman.  Two years later, while in prison after pleading guilty for the murder of Trotman, Cummings was charged as one of the two men responsible for the June 2015 homicide of Shameik Floyd.

He was sentenced to 25 years on a manslaughter conviction to follow a 20-year-to-life sentence for another murder.

Cummings appealed the length of his prison terms, but the Appellate Division of State Supreme Court ruled on December 29, 2021, that the sentences were not excessive.  Cummings is not eligible for parole until the year 2061.

A second man, Trent Yant was also arrested in connection with the murder of Floyd.  Yant is currently imprisoned at Green Haven on a robbery conviction and is not eligible for parole until 2028.
