SPRING VALLEY – Fire Monday night raged through an apartment complex in Spring Valley leaving up to 50 families homeless.

The blaze broke out around 9:30 p.m. at 53 Ewing Avenue in the Surrey-Carlton Apartments.

Spring Valley Fire Chief Ken Conjura said they were met by heavy flames and smoke coming from the living room of a top floor apartment in the three-story building.

Spring Valley Police Detective Matt Galli said a woman was trapped unconscious inside, suffering from smoke inhalation. Neighbors brought her downstairs where she regained consciousness and was taken to the hospital.

The officials said a firefighter was also injured when debris fell on his head in a stairwell. He was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Galli said more than 20 apartments suffered heavy smoke and water damage and two sustained extensive fire damage. The cause is under investigation.

The Red Cross was on hand to assist those displaced residents with housing.

This is the second fire at the Surrey-Carlton Apartment complex in the last two weeks. On February 26, fire broke out in another building leaving 63 adults and 23 children homeless.

This latest fire is the fourth apartment complex fire in the Village of Spring Valley since early February.
