NEW PALTZ – A New Paltz man is in the hospital after being shot while holding police at bay early Saturday.
New Paltz Police were called to a residence on Route 32 near Brookside Road in the town shortly after 3 a.m. following up on a domestic complaint.
When officers arrived, a man inside fired a round from a high-powered rifle. Police took cover and attempted to negotiate with the man, but he kept firing at the officers hitting several New Paltz Police and Ulster County Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicles, which officers were using as cover.
One officer returned fire.
Negotiators continued to try to contact the man, but were unsuccessful and police entered the house finding the man unconscious with a gunshot wound.
Medical treatment was administered and the man was flown to an area hospital where his condition was unknown as of Saturday.
The investigation is continuing. Police did not say if the round fired by the officer struck the man, who they did not publicly identify.
New Paltz Police were assisted by the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office, State Police, Lloyd Police, Plattekill Police, SUNY New Paltz Police, New Paltz Rescue Squad, New Paltz Fire Department and the Ulster County District Attorney’s Office.
