ALBANY- Legislation proposed by Assemblymember Jonathan Jacobson (D, Newburgh) was adopted in the state budget passed by lawmakers and signed by Governor Hochul earlier this month that would create new rules to those attending college realize the full benefit of federal college assistance.

Under the newly adopted rule, high school seniors will either complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or sign a waiver.  Jacobson says this will reduce a large sum of financial aid that is left unallocated each year.

“We shouldn’t have another generation of students, or another year, leaving over $200 million in financial aid on the table annually,” said Jacobson.  “It’s very simple here — the biggest obstacle to going to college is the cost.  The way to cut down the cost is to have grants and scholarships.  The way you get grants and scholarships is to first fill out the FAFSA.”
