WASHINGTON – Republican leadership in the House of Representatives late Friday afternoon cancelled a vote to repeal Obamacare and replace it with so-called Trumpcare after they realized they would not have enough votes to make the change.
Freshman Congressman John Faso (R, NY-19) voted for Trumpcare, but believes a compromise would work.
“Pulling the bill from the floor on Friday means that there is no Republican consensus for the Affordable Care Act, and as such, it is incumbent upon those of us in Congress to find incremental improvements and reforms to the ACA and hopefully with bipartisan support, which will actually lower costs and increase healthcare access for all Americans,” Faso said.
Democratic Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D, NY-17), who had been lobbying against the GOP proposal, said the “Hardworking American families won.”
Lowey said it is “time for Republicans to stop their misguided efforts to destroy the progress we’ve made and get to work on commonsense solutions that will help all Americans receive the quality, affordable care they deserve.”
Fellow Democrat Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney (D, NY-18) said that “after seven years of big talk about repealing Obamacare, the best idea these guys have to offer is so terrible they can’t even get other Republicans to support it.”
Maloney would rather “improve parts” of Obamacare. “Defunding Planned Parenthood, gutting Medicare and Medicaid, cutting off health care for veterans and creating a tax on older people are just dumb ideas, and I hope Republicans in Congress can drop them so we can move on.”
