GOSHEN – A total of 1,100 people have signed up and will take the civil service exam for entry level Orange County municipal police officer or deputy sheriff. The test will be held at a number of locations in the county tomorrow (Saturday).
County Human Resources Commissioner Steven Gross said the test applies to town and village police departments and the county sheriff’s office.
The three cities – Newburgh, Middletown and Port Jervis – have their own independent civil service departments.
Over 800 of the applicants will be tested at seven designated sites while 300 others will take the test at alternate sites.
Gross noted this year’s number of candidates who are taking the test is almost double the number of those who took the last test four years ago. He credited that to the “aggressive effort to alert the public about the exam.”
Each participating police agency may use the civil service list to offer jobs to candidates once the test has been administered and graded.
