NEWBURGH – The Police Department in Newburgh will hire five new officers on a temporary basis – four of them police officers and one a sergeant.
Police Chief Daniel Cameron said four officers are expected to retire by next January and he is trying to stay ahead of the curve since the next police academy is in September.
“There are only two academies a year so we try to put as many people in the academy as possible and we are facing four retirements by the end of the January 2017,” Cameron said. “The next academy is not until March so we are trying to stay ahead of the curve and hire additional officers that can go into the academy now so that we don’t have to backfill later and we would be about six months behind.”
Funding for the temporary jobs will be covered by money from unfilled positions.
The city council will vote on the positions late this afternoon in special session.
