BREWSTER – For the past two days since a flaming crash closed I-95 in Norwalk, Connecticut due to a damaged bridge, traffic along I-84 in Putnam County and the nearby Danbury area has been excessively heavy resulting in a number of serious crashes.

State Police reported three personal injury mishaps in Southeast, Kent and Patterson on Friday. However, the most serious incident took place in Danbury at the New York-Connecticut state line when a compact sedan rear-ended a tractor trailer truck pinning five occupants.

Connecticut State Police reported serious injuries with ambulances and fire apparatus from Danbury rushed to the scene. Additional assistance was needed and as firefighters used the ‘Jaws of Life’ to dismantle the car from the victims, the Brewster Fire Department  ambulance and Rescue Squad was returning to Putnam after dropping off a patient at Danbury Hospital from a previous crash and was caught in the heavy traffic. The rig was enlisted to assist Danbury units with transporting patients who were taken to Danbury Hospital with various injuries.

Putnam Commissioner of Emergency Services Robert Lipton said Putnam responders were always happy to assist their neighbors across the border as are Connecticut first responders who are frequently summoned to assist Putnam firefighters and EMS at serious incidents.
