MONTICELLO – The Sullivan County Legislature has taken note of
a very special day for the many people of Ukrainian heritage living in
the county.

One of the biggest concentrations in the United States is in Glen Spey,
noted County Legislator Nadia Rajsz.

They will be celebrating later today (Saturday), but there is a somber
side to it this year, Russia’s move into Ukraine, beginning with
the Crimea peninsula in 2014.

“And its continued invasion into Ukraine,” Rajsz said. “[Russian
President] Putin uses every distraction that he could find. Right now,
we have the Olympics going on. We have Ukrainian Independence that will
be celebrated in the capital of Kiev on the 24th. Any type of distraction
that he could find, he will send more troops into Ukraine. He wants that
country at all cost.”

Local Ukrainians will try to put that aside with an Independence Day celebration
at Mountain View Manor in Glen Spey, beginning with a concert at 3 p.m.
and a Zabava, or party, beginning at 6 p.m. Admission is charged.
