POUGHKEEPSIE – The Dutchess County Public Transit system has begun using artificial intelligence to reduce bus breakdowns.

The AI system by Preteckt is like having a mechanic on the bus, said public transit Director Michael Grattini.

“We will get reports or alerts from the company’s software that will let us know that an alternator may be going bad, or a water pump may be going bad, or there might be some issues with the air conditioning that have not presented itself yet, but the system itself can actually read code sin the engine that creates these alerts for us,” he said.

Those advanced notices have saved money for towing costs and road service calls by mechanics rather than keeping them in the shop for maintenance and repairs, Grattini said.

Eighty percent of the cost of the AI service is recouped with federal money.
