KINGSTON – Joseph Karolys, age 38, will remain in the Ulster County Jail without bail for his role in the death of 66-year-old David “Mickey” Myer, who was killed in Saugerties in October of 2022.  Karolys was arrested earlier this week after being indicted by the Ulster County Grand Jury on charges of manslaughter, tampering with physical evidence, and attempted bribery of a witness.  He was arraigned earlier this week in Ulster County Court.

The indictment stems from a homicide investigation conducted by the Town of Saugerties Police Department in collaboration with area regional law enforcement agencies into the death of David “Mickey” Myer, whose body was found on the side of State Route 32 in October 2022.  Karolys faces 5 to 25 years in state prison if convicted on the manslaughter charge, with additional five years of post-release supervision.

Chief Assistant District Attorney Emmanuel Nneji, the lead prosecutor in the case, said “There is no more serious crime than that which involves the taking of another person’s life, and our office will do everything in its power, in collaboration with our local law enforcement agencies, to see that justice is done.”

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney and Anti-Gun Violence Unit Chief Kristen Druse and Chief Assistant Nneji. The defendant is represented by William Pretsch.
