SAUGERTIES – A lengthy investigation into the October 2022 death of 66-year-old Saugerties resident David “Mickey” Myers has resulted in the arrests of Joseph Karolys, 38, and a 17-year-old youth.  The Ulster County Grand Jury indicted Karolys on the felony charges of manslaughter, assault, tampering with physical evidence, and attempted bribery of a witness.  The suspect was remanded to the Ulster County Jail without bail earlier this week.

The teenager was arraigned in the Youth Part of Ulster County Court on felony charges of manslaughter, assault, and tampering with physical evidence.  He was remanded to a youth detention facility on $250,000 cash bail or a $1,000,000 bond.

According to Saugerties Police Chief Joseph Sinagra, his officers responded to a 911 call on October 29, 2022 at 7:28 a.m., reporting an unconscious and unresponsive person lying on the side of the road, south of the Citgo Mart on Route 32.  First arriving officers, joined by fire and ambulance personnel found the victim, later identified as Myers, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Saugerties Police Detectives initiated an investigation into the cause of Myer’s death, requesting assistance from the New York State Police BCI from Kingston, Major Crimes, and Field Investigations Units from Middletown, and the Ulster County District Attorney’s Office.

Armed with Superior Court Warrants of Arrest, incidental to Grand Jury indictments, Saugerties Police along with assistance from the New York State Police Major Crime Unit arrested Karolys and his teenage co-defendant.

The Investigation is continuing, and additional arrests are pending.
