Mayor Joseph DeStefano and Rep. Sean Maloney tour downtown Middletown

MIDDLETOWN – A water main that services two-thirds of the residents of the City of Middletown is antiquated and in need of replacement and that is going to happen now that Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney (D, NY-18) secured $3.5 million as part of the congressional infrastructure package.

Maloney, Mayor Joseph DeStefano other city officials toured the downtown area where the work is about to begin.

DeStefano said without the federal funding, the cost of replacing the line would be prohibitive.

“Here in Middletown, the infrastructure that we are replacing, I think is 1880; the main will be coming down from our water treatment plant. It will be about a mile. We have 75 miles of water mains in our city, so you could imagine the cost of doing it on our own,” he said.

Maloney also said there is funding, in the millions, to replace lead water service lines in the entire country.
