CARMEL – Seventeen residents of Putnam County recited their oath of allegiance to the United States and received a rousing ovation at the historic Putnam Courthouse Wednesday. They are America’s newest citizens.

Since 2015, following a 20-year hiatus, hundreds of newcomers have taken their oaths thanks to the efforts of County Clerk Michael Bartolotti and his staff.

They come from all corners of the earth –17 countries to be precise, including Brazil, Canada, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Guyana, Italy, Jamaica, Jordan, Mexico, Peru, Portugal, and the United Kingdom.

The 45-minute ceremony was officiated over by State Supreme Court Justice Anthony Mole. “We all have a story. My grandparents emigrated from Italy where they met on a ship crossing the Atlantic. My wife emigrated from the Dominican Republican. Opportunities are here. Take advantage of them. Become involved in your community,” he said.

The judge also advised those in attendance that “today (May 1) is Law Day. It’s most fitting that this very special ceremony is taking place on this day in our historical Putnam County Courthouse.”

Father Szymon Kurpios of St. James Church delivered a prayer, also advising the new citizens that he celebrates his citizenship this month. “I became a proud United States citizen five years ago. Remember to always treat others with respect,” he said.

State Assemblyman Matt Slater described the day as a “great celebration. You are achieving a dream or millions of people from around the world. Putnam County is a wonderful place to call home. We all have a story and connection to the past. We are a melting pot, and we celebrate your values.”

County Clerk Bartolotti reminded those in attendance that naturalization ceremonies were the “best part of my job. I commend each and every one of you for your efforts leading to this auspicious day.”
