MONTICELLO – The Village of Monticello and Town of Thompson are teaming up to apply for a $10 million state Downtown Revitalization Initiative grant.

The annual program was put on hold last year because of the pandemic.

Previous Hudson Valley recipients have been the cities if Middletown, Kingston, New Rochelle and Peekskill.

The program has been modified this year to allow municipalities with contiguous downtowns to apply for a grant.

Thompson and Monticello are applying for funding to improve the downtown corridor that encompasses all of Broadway – including East Broadway, where Route 17’s Exit 106 connects the downtown with the Resorts World complex, and West Broadway, where 170 new townhouse units are under construction.

“The DRI is very important, and I believe Monticello has a good chance of winning it due to the growth we’ve been throughout all sectors,” said Mayor George Nikolados. “This is a tome when it could make a major impact in the village.”

“We’re excited to participate with the village and county,” said Thompson Town Supervisor Bill Rieber. “The focus is on the gateway entrance from the casino to the village and rehabilitating the downtown business corridor, particularly adding parking.”
