POUGHKEEPSIE – A City of Poughkeepsie police officer was injured during a struggle with a man who was being arrested on Sunday morning. Berry Pittman Jr., 45, of Poughkeepsie attempted to take an officer’s firearm during a fight to take him into custody.
On August 22 at approximately 9:30 a.m. officers responded to 88 Cannon Street for a report of a fight in progress. When officers arrived, they encountered Pittman who was known to have a restraining order against him prohibiting him from being on the property at 88 Cannon Street.
When the cops attempted to take Pittman into custody, a struggle began and Pittman attempted to take one officer’s handgun from its holster. The arresting officer discharged his taser in an attempt to subdue Pittman but was unsuccessful.
The struggle continued and Pittman was eventually taken into custody by several officers, according to police officials. During the struggle, one of the officers sustained injuries to his shoulder and wrist that required treatment at the hospital and will require follow-up care.
Pittman faces felony charges of criminal possession of a weapon, the misdemeanor charge of resisting arrest, and the violation of trespassing.
