KINGSTON – January is the worse month since the pandemic hit in terms of claiming lives in Ulster County. The month is not yet over, and 64 people have succumbed to the virus.

County Executive Patrick Ryan said Tuesday that one in 20 residents of the county has contracted the deadly disease.

The county has been administering its meager allotment of vaccine through churches, senior centers, and pharmacies, but Ryan noted that the 1,500 doses they have received are a drop in the bucket.

“We have nearly 70,000 people eligible and we still received less than 10,000 doses in the county cumulatively, so we have a lot more work to do even to get to those who are eligible in 1A and 1B and 65-plus,” he said.

The county is administering shots in Kingston and Saugerties this week and next week and will concentrate on senior centers in the Ellenville area.
