Letter to the Editor: Skoufis and Jacobson need to stand against Danskammer

Last week over 150 officials signed onto a letter addressed to Gov. Cuomo urging him to reject the application for the Danskammer gas-fired plant in Newburgh.

For some reason, Sen. James Skoufis and Assemblymember Jonathan Jacobson’s names are not among them.

This is disturbing coming from Democratic lawmakers in a state that just one year ago passed the progressive Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA), which aims to direct the production of 70% carbon-free electricity by 2030, 100% by 2040, and a moratorium on new gas infrastructure.

We cannot dither anymore on the climate. The clock is ticking. Fossil fuel companies are not just going to transition to renewable energy because it’s the right thing to do. Their paramount concern is profit. The letter to the governor’s 150 signatories represent elected officials receptive to their constituents’ unrelenting pleas to listen to scientists’ warnings.

We urge Sen. Skoufis and Assemblymember Jacobson to reconsider and join their peers in doing what is moral, logical, and sound.

Sincerely,

Ted Millar
