POUGHKEEPSIE – Lifelong Poughkeepsie resident Walter Patrice has died. He passed away on Sunday, December 16 at age 99.
Known as “Toot” to his friends and family, he enlisted in the US Army in 1942 and served in the Mediterranean theater during World War II.
In later years he served on the city’s Recreation Committee, the Poughkeepsie Planning Board, the Dutchess County Historical Society, the Executive Men’s Club of Poughkeepsie, the Colored Troops Museum of Hartwick College in Oneonta, and the American Society of Manufacturing Engineers.
Patrice worked for IBM fir 33 years until his retirement in 1985.
Among his honors was his induction into the Sports Hall of fame for Johnson C. Smith College in Charlotte, North Carolina, the Dutchess County Baseball Hall of Fame and the Dutchess County Sports Museum Hall of Fame.
“He was an inspiration to everyone who knew him,” said Mayor Robert Rolison.
