There were two first-place prizes, two second-place prizes, two third-place prizes, and several honorable mention posters on display. There were also two grand prize winners, one in the English language category and the other in the Spanish language category.
Sierra Norris, a junior at Liberty High School, won the English language grand prize and Meleny Juarez Cadena, a 3rd grade student from Fallsburg’s Benjamin Cosar Elementary School, won the Spanish language grand prize.
Each grand prize winner was awarded $250. Catholic Charities’ Sullivan County prevention coordinator, L.A. Branch, spoke about the importance of the poster contest program.
“We start children at a young age so that they know the dangers of drugs and alcohol use. It’s also about setting goals and how to deal with other children’s bullying and stuff like that,” said Branch.
Assemblywoman Alien Gunther has been a long-time supporter of the program. “I haven’t missed a year of this important event in Sullivan County.”
