NEWBURGH – Provisional Newburgh Police Chief Douglas Solomon has passed the civil service test and is now officially permanent chief.
The city’s Civil Service Commission on Wednesday certified the results of the test, specifically that Solomon and one other person passed the exam.
City Manager Michael Ciaravino said he was confident Solomon would pass the test.
“He did that on very, very short notice and without having taken or studied for the exam in, I think, almost 20 years,” the manager said. “It’s remarkable with very little time to prepare he passed and we are looking forward to Chief Solomon being the official police chief of the Newburgh Police Department.”
Solomon was happy that he can continue on the job.
“I have been doing this a long time and I feel I am capable and I am a good fit for this community and we will move forward,” he said.
Prior to coming to Newburgh, Solomon was police chief in the City of Beacon, and before that, chief in the Village of Monticello, where he also served as mayor until recently resigning.
