KINGSTON – Work has begun on the $4.6 million project to remodel South Putt Corners Road in the Town of New Paltz.
The major work is part of the “Building a Better Ulster County” initiative designed by County Executive Michael Hein.
“This road is a major thoroughfare that has New Paltz High School on that road, it has DEC on that road, it has the New Paltz Police Department and a number of houses and businesses and it is a huge connection port,” Hein said. “So, making sure that it safer with dedicated turn lanes, with six-foot-wide shoulders on both sides and specific upgrades across the board; this is what it is all about from a drainage perspective.”
Widening the shoulders on the road “is a welcomed safety measure that will also encourage activities that align with many values of our school and community,” said Superintendent of Schools Maria Rice.
Police Chief Joseph Snyder said widening the road will “definitely increase safety for the entire community, but especially for our high school students who use it to work to and from school and sporting events.”
