Passenger volume started to take off
with the start of Norwegian Air
flights last June
ALBANY – If Governor Cuomo has his way, Stewart International Airport’s name will be changed. Two area lawmakers, one on the federal level, the other a state representative, support the move.
In a continuing effort to rebrand the Newburgh facility as a New York metropolitan airport, Cuomo wants to rename it New York International at Stewart Field.
The governor also wants the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to invest $27 million to expand international service by building a permanent federal inspection station at Stewart. At present, the airport is using a temporary customs and immigration facility with a moveable wall at the passenger terminal.
The permanent international arrivals area was bolstered in mid-2017 when Norwegian Airways began flying non-stops to Europe.
Cuomo also wants to promote the Stewart Airport Express, the CoachUSA bus service from Stewart to the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Midtown Manhattan. That service schedule corresponds with the Norwegian flights arriving at Stewart.
Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney said he is “thrilled that the governor is taking charge and making things happen.” He said renaming the airport “will make it more attractive to travelers and making key investments in New York International will meet the increasing demand for travel options and help grow our regional economy.”
Assemblyman James Skoufis is also onboard with the airport’s rebranding. “Stewart Airport has real momentum. This rebranding – and investment – is a continuation of our positive efforts to attract new travelers and significantly improve services,” he said.
