MONROE – A 30-year-old Campbell Hall man has been arrested after
he tried to hold up a clerk at a Monroe gas station and stole the proceeds
from the cash register.

Monroe Village Police said a suspect, later identified as Andrew Margillo,
walked into the Mobil gas station at 4 a.m. on September 26 while wearing
a mask and gloves and carrying a bag.

He walked to the counter with the intent of robbing the clerk; however,
the clerk was in the storage room and watched the event on store surveillance
cameras and called police.

Meanwhile, Margillo opened the cash register and emptied the money, putting
it in the bag he carried in with him, before fleeing on a bicycle.

When police officers arrived, one located Margillo on the Heritage Trail.
He had the proceeds of the theft with him and a search of the area revealed
other evidence that linked him to the crime.

Margillo was charged with attempted robbery, criminal possession of stolen
property, petit larceny and criminal possession of a hypodermic instrument.

He was remanded to the Orange County Jail in lieu of $3,000 cash bail.
