WHITE PLAINS – In the wake of Holtec’s legal challenge to a state law preventing the company from dumping radioactive waste from the decommissioned Indian Point nuclear power plants into the Hudson River, Westchester County Executive George Latimer Monday said he “firmly stand(s) behind the New York State law aimed at protecting the Hudson River, a cherished gem for recreation and tourism in our region. The State has rightfully taken measures to safeguard the health and integrity of our waterways.”

He noted the law passed in 2023 prohibits the movement of any radiological substance into the Hudson River during the decommissioning of a nuclear power plant and “reflects our shared commitment to environmental protection and public safety. The Hudson River holds ecological and economic value for our communities, and it is our responsibility to ensure its preservation for current and future generations.”

He said five county executives of both political parties have stood up for protecting the river and back the law.

“We firmly believe that the state has acted in the best interest of our residents and the environment,” Latimer said.
