NEW CITY – Rockland County has joined other area counties in a lawsuit against pharmaceutical companies that made or sold prescription opioids that officials believe contributed to the epidemic of abuse.
County Executive Edwin Day said in 2016, there were 40 drug-related deaths, 37 from opioids. So far this year, there have been 16 drug-related deaths, 15 of them from opioids.
“This is a scourge, this is an epidemic. We are taking actions that are consistent with the public health and also consistent with protecting the taxpayer’s pocketbook,” Day said.
Orange, Dutchess, Ulster and Sullivan are among the area counties that have also
joined the lawsuit.
