ALBANY – The New York Public Interest Research Group launched an interactive online portfolio called “What’s in My Water” to provide data about contaminants, threats and potential threats to local drinking water supplies.
NYPIRG Program Director Megan Ahern said the project cuts through the red tape and government jargon about water quality.
“We have seen nationally with Flint, Michigan and also locally here in New York, Hoosick Falls, on Long Island and in Newburgh, toxic chemicals are poisoning water locally and when you try to find information about your own local water, you will sometimes be faced with dense reporting and charts from the EPA that are not user friendly,” Ahern said.
NYPIRG compiled the profile data from several government records sources between June 2016 and February of this year. It may be accessed at www.nypirg.org/whatsinmywater/
