GOSHEN – Twelve people were charged as part of an enforcement action targeting sex offenders in the City of Newburgh who failed to register with the state and city police department.
Four were arrested on May 15 and are being held in the Orange County Jail. Six others were indicted by an Orange County grand jury and charged with felonies for failure to register as a sex offender. Arrest warrants were issued for them.
The Newburgh City Police Department and Orange County District Attorney’s Office are seeking the public’s assistance in locating those defendants. Anyone with information is urged to call Newburgh Detective Erik Eltz at 845-569-7560 or the Orange County DA’s office at 845-291-2050.
State law mandates that individuals convicted of certain crimes be designated as “sex offenders,” and that they register their addresses with the Division of Criminal Justice Services. The law also requires sex offenders who move to register their new addresses within 10 calendar days after the change of address.
The law also requires that certain sex offenders designated as level three offenders, personally appear every year at the law enforcement agency having jurisdiction over their residence to provide a current photograph. Level one and level two sex offenders are required to appear at least every three years to update their photographs.
