MIDDLETOWN – The City of Middletown will hire up to six part-time police officers. The action, approved by the common council Tuesday night, came following the approval of the police union.
The new officers will be used for foot and bike patrols and for additional coverage during special events.
The new cops can be retirees, city officials said.
The council also approved a ban on sparkling fireworks in the city. Last year, Middletown led the effort to leave the potential for a ban up to individual cities.
The state allows certain sparking fireworks during holiday periods, but
after the first round, Middletown officials sought to leave that up to
themselves. They felt the use of those fireworks got out of hand with
people shooting them off in the middle of residential streets and creating
a hazard.
