Cuomo speaks, Day applauds

WEST HAVERSTRAW – Governor Mario Cuomo is a liberal Democrat, Rockland County Executive Edwin Day is a conservative Republican; yet they stood side by side on stage on Thursday to discuss property tax relief, consolidation and sharing of services.
Dutchess County Executive Marcus Molinaro, another fiscally conservative Republican, has joined forces with those who belief Cuomo’s latest initiative would detract from local government control.
Day said while he supports shared services, Cuomo’s proposal is in the design stage.
“As much as Marcus and I agreed on the way this is rolled out is not being the most appropriate way of doing it, the governor has changed his tune and Marcus was in Albany with me to hear that. I don’t know what the final form will be,” Day said. “People need to understand this is something that will be voted on as part of the budget, but I think it is important to take a look at any opportunity to try to save taxpayer dollars. If it comes out that it is not something that is viable, I certainly would not support it.”
Any effort to rein in spending and limit taxes should include school districts since they make up more than 70 percent of the average residential tax bill, said Day.
