NEW YORK – US Senator Charles
Schumer, the Democratic minority leader, sees his new role after 18 years
in the upper house as one of providing checks and balances up against
the Republican House of Representatives and GOP president.
Schumer addressed the annual session of the New York Association of Towns in New York City on Tuesday and told the local officials they face opportunities and liabilities.
Among the greatest opportunity is a large infrastructure bill to be debated to provide funding for water, sewer, roads and bridges, that the localities can ill-afford.
“One of the liabilities is some of the tax ideas they are bandying around to eliminate state and local deductibility, to put a real cap on the mortgage deduction, to even take away the deductibility of municipal bonds,” the senator said.
Schumer said his “New York values” will drive him.
