POUGHKEEPSIE – The Poughkeepsie Common Council must approve the transfer of its bus service to Dutchess County by March or there will be no city service come July, County Executive Marcus Molinaro warned on Tuesday.
The city funded the service only through June and Molinaro said that an agreement for the county to take it over must be approved within weeks.
“This is a very complicated transfer of city service to county service with a number of partners including the Federal Transportation Administration and it will take that much time and more for us to expand our service,” Molinaro said. “The city council knew this and we are hopeful that they will move forward and adopt the MOU and we can move forward and provide service to city residents.”
Even with the city funding its bus service for six months, property taxes rose by 16 percent. Mayor Robert Rolison hopes the transfer to the county will improve service and help slow down the city’s financial bleeding.
