WASHINGTON – The debate over President Trump’s temporary ban on immigration from seven Middle Eastern counties continues to spur debate among public officials.
Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney (D, NY18) believes the executive order was wrong, but it won’t incite terrorists to retaliate against the US.
“I think the ISIS terrorists have their own reasons for wanting to kill us and they aren’t going to change much, but I do think it is doing a lot of damage with our allies and with the good people in the Muslim world who want to be our friends including those who risk their lives alongside American service members in Iraq who are being caught up in this thing,” Maloney said. “It makes no sense. It is incompetent, clumsy and makes no sense.”
Congressman John Faso (R, NY19), who believes the immigration ban will incite terrorists to strike back, has another concern as well.
“I have a concern in relation to the back and forth with Mexico
and I think that will unintentionally inspire a nationalist fervor and
a left wing nationalist fervor in Mexico, which would be very bad for
the national security interests of the United States,” Faso said.
“So, I think these things need to be better considered and better
thought out before executive actions in the form of executive orders or
tweets are issued.”
Representative Nita Lowey (D, NY17) was among those minority members of both Houses
of Congress who, on Monday, called on Trump to rescind “his unconstitutional
executive order banning refugees based on their religion.”
