MONTICELLO – The number of reported burglaries in Sullivan County declined by 41.6 percent from 2012 to 2015, according to the latest statistics released by the state Division of Criminal Justice Services.
In 2012, there were 569 reported cases compared with 332 in 2015.
District Attorney James Farrell said combating home burglary is one of his top priorities.
“We think that this number is being driven down because of our aggressive approach to these types of crimes and aggressive prosecutions,” Farrell said. “So, law enforcement on the investigation end in solving them, picking up these people who are responsible for these crimes, and our aggressive approach once we have apprehended them is a formula for success.”
Total crime in Sullivan was down 19.7 percent with property crime down 22 percent and larceny down 17 percent. Violent crime was up eight percent in 2015. That uptick comes after drops in violent crime of eight percent in 2011, 10 percent in 2012, five percent in 2013 and eight percent in 2014.
