PLEASANT VALLEY – A fire in a large detached garage on Salt Point Turnpike Friday brought the Pleasant Valley and Roosevelt Fire Departments to the scene just before 8 p.m. and closed the road for a while.  Firefighters worked quickly to prevent the fire from spreading to the house which is located less than five feet away from the wooden garage.

Firefighters encountered items in the garage and inside the house and requested police to respond to the scene for further investigation.

The garage contained a large heating oil tank that ruptured on the seam, causing oil to begin escaping.  The Dutchess County Hazmat team was summoned to the incident.  The specialized first responders worked to remove the oil to prevent further leaking and initiated spill mitigation to prevent an environmental issue.

The Dutchess County Fire Investigation Division responded to investigate the cause and origin of the blaze.

The female resident of the house was combative with firefighters who evacuated her from the house while they worked to keep the home from igniting.  The woman insisted on being allowed back into the dwelling to collect her pets.  Her re-entry was denied.  Earlier this week a woman perished in Dover when she went back into her burning mobile home to save her cats and she was unable to exit the smoke-filled, flaming dwelling.

No injuries were reported at Friday night’s fire.
