ALBANY – Governor Cuomo signed legislation that prevents telecommunications companies and utility providers from charging a contract termination or early cancellation fee in the event of a customer’s death.
Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther (D, Forestburgh) introduced the legislation after her mother, Therese Malone, passed away and a utility company tried to charge her account an early termination fee. Gunther wondered if that was happening to her family, “how many others have been taken advantage of.”
Senator John Bonacic (R, Mount Hope) called the new law “common-sense, pro-consumer legislation.”
