Body found in Kinderhook identified as missing woman

GREENPORT – The body of a woman found in a wooded area off Old Post Road in the Town of Kinderhook in the early morning hours of Saturday, September 10 has been identified as Halle Schmidt, 21, who had been reported missing to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office on September 4.
Investigator Kevin Skype said an autopsy was conducted with forensic evidence still being gathered.
Schmidt was identified by matching clothing that she was last seen wearing, tattoos on her body, and information obtained through the investigation, police said. Schmidt was last seen on foot in the area of Route 66 and Route 23B in the Town of Greenport during the early morning hours of Saturday, September 3.
Sheriff’s investigators said the case remains an active criminal
one and is considered a homicide as are all cases involving unsolved deaths
unless they are proven otherwise.
