MIDDLETOWN – John Degnan, the recently retired director of the Middletown Downtown Business Improvement District, died on Saturday.

Mayor Joseph DeStefano said Degnan was beloved and accomplished in all of life’s journeys.

“He was just so involved in our downtown revitalization. We called him the heart and soul of the city and also ‘Mr. Middletown,’ he was so many things to so many people here and was also a guiding light for all of us in the city government,” the mayor said.

During his career, Degnan was a high school teacher, football coach, Orange County director of purchasing, member of the city common council, and a member of the Stewart Airport Commission.
