NEWBURGH – The Newburgh City Council approved a contract with the state Department of Environmental Conservation Monday night for that agency to pay for New York City aqueduct water. The city switched over to that source after the cancer-causing chemical PFOS was found contaminating the city’s Washington Lake reservoir.
City Manager Michael Ciaravino said the contract will run from June 1
through October 21, 2017 with a cap of $11.5 million.
“With the authority we received from city council [Monday] evening, we fully expect that the reimbursement will begin quickly,” Ciaravino said. “It is a matter now for our city comptroller to tie up the mechanics of the reimbursement.”
The DEC has also committed to designing and installing a new carbon filtration system to purify the water in Washington Lake.
