MIDDLETOWN – The two Middletown City police officers who shot and killed a man who came at them with a gun were identified by the police administration Tuesday as Officer George Nelson, an 11-year veteran of the of the Middletown PD and Officer Jason Berman, a 10-year veteran.  Both previously served with the New York City Police Department,
“Both officers have served with distinction throughout their careers and are respected members of the City of Middletown Police Department,” said Lt. Gregory Metakes, bureau commander of Services.
The men fired at Richard Dinneny, 53, of Middletown as he walked out of the Overlook Drive apartment of his on-again, off-again girlfriend. He was armed with a pellet gun and told officers he wanted to die.   Officers fired after he refused orders to drop the gun.
The Orange County District Attorney’s Office is currently investigating the July 13 incident.
Both officers remain on administrative leave, which is routine procedure.
