NEW CITY – A Spring Valley youth was arraigned in Rockland County Court on Wednesday on a three-count indictment charging him with intentional murder, murder and robbery, all as felonies.
The charges against Jiwan Coleman, 16, are related to the July 2 death of Ruben Suchite Torres.
At around 11:42 p.m. on June 26, Torres was walking from the Spring Valley Transit Center to his home on North Myrtle Avenue in Spring Valley after work. He was followed by Coleman who allegedly attacked him from behind, striking him on the back of the head with a rock. When Torres collapsed to the sidewalk, police say Coleman stole his cell phone and wallet before fleeing on foot.
The victim remained in a coma at Westchester Medical Center until he died on July 2.
Coleman was arrested by Spring Valley Police on June 28.  He is being held in lieu of $3.5 million bail.  If convicted of the murder, he faces 25 years to life in prison.
