LIBERTY – A raccoon has tested positive for the rabies virus in Sullivan County, county Public Health Services announced on Wednesday. The county did not immediately say where this first case of rabies occurred.
The animal was seen wandering in the daytime near a residence in the
Livingston Manor area and had been acting obviously ill, officials said.
This is the first confirmed case of rabies in an animal in Sullivan County
so far this year.
The raccoon may have had a brief encounter with the family dog, and the
dog will be quarantined for observation.
The rabies virus occurs commonly in animals in the state with the vast majority of rabies cases reported each year occurring in wild animals, including raccoons, bats, foxes, skunks and woodchucks.
Domestic animals account for less than 10 percent of the reported rabies cases, which most often include cats, cattle and dogs.
