TOWN OF POUGHKEEPSIE – When Fairview Fire District personnel were dispatched to a report of a boat in distress in the Hudson River at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, they found several high school-aged children in the water off the Marist Boat House. Many were being removed by other boaters.
The kids had been participating in crew practice and were from several area schools.
A total of 57 were evaluated and provided warmth due to their exposure, said Fairview Chief Christopher Maeder. Five of them were transported to local medical facilities by Fairview and Mobile Life Support Services.
Assisting in the rescue operation were fire departments from the City of Poughkeepsie, New Hamburg and Highland, Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office and Marist College Security.
There were no injuries to fire service personnel, Maeder said.
