NEWBURGH – Officers assigned to a special foot patrol detail late Monday afternoon made a significant find when they discovered three handguns in one area.
Officers Jeffrey Perez and John Maguire were on patrol walking in the area of William and Hasbrouck streets at 4:30 p.m., an area known to have a high number of gun-related incidents.  The officers know how contraband is hidden, said Police Chief Daniel Cameron.
“They know that people don’t always carry the guns on them, they sometimes secret them so they just started going through garbage cans and any abandoned cars that they found and in that process they located three handguns; two were in a garbage can and one was under the hood of an abandoned car that was close to the garbage can,” the chief said.
The weapons recovered in the garbage can were both loaded handguns – a Dan Wesson .357 magnum revolver reported stolen from Tampa, Florida, and a High Point .380 caliber semi-automatic pistol.
Under the vehicle hood was a loaded Raven Arms .25 caliber semi-automatic pistol.
The three weapons were turned over to Crime Scene Unit detectives, who are investigating.
The street patrol officers are part of the G.I.V.E. (Gun Involved Violence Elimination) initiative.
