MONROE – Town Supervisor Harley Doles, who has been on a medical leave of absence since December and will undergo corrective surgery this week, said he was threatened with arrest for going into Monroe Town Hall last Friday.
In his absence in recent weeks, Town councilman Anthony Cardone has been acting town supervisor.
Doles said he was almost charged by police with trespassing because he did not produce a note from his doctor before he could return to town hall as per a resolution sponsored by Cardone and adopted by the town board.
“This is ridiculous and is also dangerous when an elected official on advice of counsel winds up creating their own rules and regulations and then to enforce it calls the police to arrest the supervisor of the town,” the supervisor said.
Doles said he had every right to go to town hall as the elected chief executive officer of the municipality.
“It’s the Wild West version of government coming to Monroe and Mr. Cardone is trying to be the sheriff,” Doles said. “This is a democracy. This is America. We have rights, rules and privileges and you are not the only one who runs government; you have four other board members including the supervisor of the town.”
