Borchert: “We will work together …”

POUGHKEEPSIE – Dale Borchert was the overwhelming but not unanimous choice to be the leader of the Dutchess County Legislature, which has a substantial majority following the November election.
There are 16 Republicans, six Democrats and two independents.
The three “no” votes against Borchert were from Democrats Francena Amparo, Kari Rieser and Joel Tyner.
In an address lasting under 10 minutes, Borchert said he welcomed the views of those who opposed him.
“The fact that each of us comes from such different backgrounds ought to serve as our greatest strength going forward,” the new chairman said.  “We will work together to craft the best policy by making sure that everyone feels like they have a seat at the table.  I pledge that in this legislature, each and every point of view will be heard and it will be respected.”
Taking a ‘wait-and-see’ approach to that promise is the new Democrat Minority Leader, Micki Strawinski, who voted for Borchert as chairman.
“Differing opinions are good as this often sheds new light on possibilities.  What I don’t want to see is for us to come combative.”
Strawinski was specifically referring to a lingering debate over how to deal with offenders, in particular, those with often neglected needs.
Borchert said that will be a top priority early on.
“A system that protects victims and holds those that break the law accountable.  A system that assists those with addiction and mental health issues.  And, one that sets in motion a system that can change the lives of the most desperate members of our community.”
Borchert’s agenda also includes infrastructure enhancements and promoting two of the county’s key industries – agriculture and tourism.
He also promised to commit the legislature to continuing its role as a “responsible steward of the taxpayer dollars.”
