POUGHKEEPSIE – The first official order of business for the new
mayor and Poughkeepsie Common Council was to appoint longtime Police Chief
Ronald Knapp as acting city administrator. That came during a special
meeting Saturday afternoon, less than two hours after the new mayor and
council were sworn in.

Mayor Robert Rolison said Knapp has been part of a team working on a smooth
transition.

“We have had numerous meetings with transition team and Ron has
proved to be invaluable, I feel very competent, that as we move forward
into this new year, before we get a permanent city administrator, that
the chief will be invaluable to all of us and I ask you to support this
appointment,” Rolison said.

The council enthusiastically agreed in a unanimous vote.

The appointment, normally for 60 days, was, at the request of the mayor,
made for 90 days, in hopes that a national search can find an acceptable
new candidate in that time.

The Dyson Foundation awarded the city a $50,000 grant to fund the search.
