RHINEBECK – Two people were rescued when a large frame awning attached to a house collapsed on top of them on Violet Hill Road in the Town of Rhinebeck shortly after 5 p.m. on Tuesday. The victims were trapped by the weight of the snow covered awning and had to be cut out from underneath using extrication tools from the responding rescue truck.
One victim was transported to Northern Dutchess Hospital in grave condition, said fire officials. The second victim needed more extensive extrication, was treated at the scene and transported by ambulance with serious injuries to MidHudson Regional Hospital in Poughkeepsie.
State Police are investigating the incident.
