POUGHKEEPSIE – Supporters and opponents of the City of Poughkeepsie selling the Wheaton Park property and Pelton Manor addressed the common council Monday night. The state has given the city the okay to move forward with the sale to local developers, who plan on reviving the dormant property.
Redevelopment of the site has gotten a big boost from Planning Board Chairman William O’Neill, who will play a key role in granting approval.
“I can tell you as chairman of the planning board, we have had formal presentations by the developers,” O’Neill said.  “We find the proposal probably the only way the building will ever be saved under any circumstance, and we have seen it too many times in the city.”
Opponents of the redevelopment plan say the park and mansion should be revived as city open space, not new, privately owned housing.
The developers have said they would include some green space preservation with their proposed project.
