NEW YORK – A study of homeowners’ insurance in the state finds the highest premiums in the Hudson Valley are found in Westchester and Rockland counties.
With a rate 45 percent above the state average, the City of New Rochelle
had the highest rate of insurance of the Hudson Valley in the 72 cities
studied.
Dobbs Ferry and Mount Vernon each had premiums 41 percent higher than the state average.
At the low end of the spectrum, the City of Beacon’s cost of homeowners’ insurance was five percent lower than the state average. The City of Poughkeepsie’s rate average was nine percent lower and the City of Kingston’s rate was 11 percent lower than the state average.
Research analyst Robert Harrow of Value Penguin in New York City, said the rates are based on a number of factors.
“They are based on things like crime rate, property crime rate, specifically for products like home insurance,” Harrow said.  “They also look at response time for fire departments. Whether a particular town is staffed by a volunteer department versus a state-funded one. They also look at extreme weather conditions within the neighborhoods. There is really a host of factors.”
Elmira has the lowest homeowners’ insurance rate in the state, according to the study, followed by Binghamton, Endicott, Johnson City, Lancaster, Depew and Massena.
